The Lawyers Statutory Committee (“Committee”) is established under Section 48 of the Lawyers Act.
Functions of the Committee (s.52)
- Investigate complaints of improper conduct by lawyers.
- Suppress illegal or dishonorable practices in the profession.
- Maintain professional standards and integrity of lawyers.
- Hear complaints not only against lawyers but also against persons unlawfully engaging in legal practice.
- Advise the Law Society when a lawyer’s name should be removed from the Roll.
Powers of the Lawyers Statutory Committee (s.53–54)
- Summon lawyers to attend inquiries and provide evidence.
- Conduct hearings into complaints following due process.
- Impose penalties such as fines, suspension, or striking off from the Roll.
- Make orders relating to persons other than lawyers who unlawfully practice law.
- Recommend removal of a lawyer’s name from the Roll to the Law Society.
